Practice Makes Perfect

August 30, 2010

Once we graduate here at Ball State or another university. We than follow our destination into the real world. When first looking for jobs we must make sure that we have our resume, cover letters, and portfolios ready. Personally, I want to make sure that my resume is nice and neat, my cover letter flows from the first word to the last, and that my portfolio resembles me and my accomplishments.

So, after we have those three pieces met are we really ready? Well, you might have the paperwork done, but you still have to go through an interview. At the Career Center here at Ball State, you can call and schedule a practice job interview. When talking to the Career Center, you do need to provide them with some general information about yourself— year, major, graduation date, and reason for the appointment.

A practice job interview is a great way to gain confidence about yourself before entering the market for a job or an internship. Personally, when applying for internships last year, I scheduled a practice interview. It was easy to do and made me feel better about myself entering the job market.

When calling to schedule a practice interview, you might want to call a week in advance of the actual interview. (Giving the Career Center extra time for scheduling) Also, have a job description and resume ready to give to the person interviewing you. Lastly, you come during your schedule and start the practice interview. For students that don’t have a lot of free time around their class schedule this year. You can visit the Career Center Resource Lab, for other options pertaining to practice interviews.

A simple call to the Career Center can make the smallest or biggest improvement to you moving forward before entering the job market. For me, it has been a resource to ask questions, get answers, and move towards a promising career.
