An Introduction

September 1, 2010

Hello Out There!

If you are a new student to Ball State, welcome!  If you are a returning student, we are glad you are back with us for yet another year.  In case you were wondering who I am, my name is Caitlyn.  Im a new graduate assistant at the Career Center and a new student to BSU!  Yay for new beginnings!

Hopefully, by now, you will have gotten settled into the place you are living and the classes you’re taking.  Hopefully, you’re enjoying them as well!

Having just graduated in May of 2010, I can tell you there are things I wish I would have known and done before I my four years were up.  With that in mind, I have decided to dedicate my blog to digging up opportunities and information I wish I would have known.  I can only hope you will take my advice and apply it to your life and just maybe it will help you achieve your goals in college as well as in life in general.

That being said, EVERYONE – freshman to senior should get a job.  College is more than just getting good grades in your classes.  Its about obtaining awesome experience and if you’re a freshman that means making some money and some contacts through the workplace!  Its a fast and easy process to get started!

Step 1: Make your way to 220 Lucina Hall and ask the front desk for a REFERRAL.  Be sure to bring all of your important documents with you to help the process move more quickly.                  Note: they will probably hand you more than one referral – this does NOT mean you have been handed a job!  This is an opportunity to get a job.

Step 2: CONTACT the person on your referral.  Be prepared to set up an interview with the employer. Work around their schedule to the best of your ability.  Im not saying skip class but dont turn down an interview time, just because you have to wake up early.

Step 3: SHOW UP for your interview – ON TIME. Dress appropriately and PLEASE, don’t shoot yourself in the foot by showing up in jeans and a stained or cut off shirt!  While this may not be a suit and tie situation, black pants and a professional top wouldnt be over the top. A good first impression is everything – so put yourself out to impress.

From there the employer will help you through the process.  This is valuable work experience you should garner before your senior year.

Good Luck,

Caitlyn M.
